El Nino, 1997-1998: The Climate Event of the Century
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (April, 1900)
Authors: Stanley A. Changnon, Gerald D. Bell, David Changnon, Vernon E. Kousky, Roger A., Jr Peilke, and Lee Wilkins
Average review score:

A Superb Policy Analysis
Stanley Changnon and his colleagues have written the best, and most comprehensive analysis of what really happened with the biggest climate event of the century, the 1997-1998 El Nino. What is unique about this book is that they carefully look at both the devastation that occured and the positive impacts from the mild winter -- fewer deaths from ice storms, more shopping when people went out in milder weather, less fuel oil. They also point out the places where the forecast worked, and where it had problems. As society gets more and more sensitive to weather events, we will need more thoughtful probing into how we have responded and how we will respond. This book sets the stage, and is written by experts who have analyzed other big weather events. I strongly recommend it.

Endometriosis: A Key to Healing Through Nutrition
Published in Paperback by Thorsons Pub (September, 2002)
Authors: Michael Vernon, Dian Shepperson Mills, and Dian Shepperson Mills
Average review score:

The Best Book to Buy for Endometriosis!
I read the first edition and I had to write a review (I never do) but in doing so, I could help others with this horrible disease. The information in this book changed my life completely. I have had two surgeries for endo and countless ob/gyn visits - I finally followed the book's nutritional advice and after 3-4 weeks, my pain disappeared. Not only that, 4 months later, I became pregnant and now I am a mother to a beautiful baby girl. My energy is 100 times better - I felt so helpless before but now I feel so empowered. I have never felt so healthy! Please read - there is hope for you!!!

Pasadena
I got this book as soon as I found out it existed! I have the 1999 version, and I loved it, I took it wherever I went for reference. I haven't finished reading the new one yet, but it seems just as well done as the first, but with more information. I've been using the nutrition/supplement method for my endo and have seen a dramatic decrease in the amount of pain I experience, with some monthly cycles being totally pain free, with no medication. I also had chronic colitis at the start of the treatment, which has all but vanished. I've recommended the first book to many, for both overall health and fertility reasons, and I will definitely be recommending this one now. As a matter of fact, I bought two when I ordered it, one for a friend!

''Frenchy's Whore''
As a Vietnam Veteran myself,I've taken upon myself to read what other Vietnam Veterans have delt with in Vietnam and back home after their service. Mr. Brewers book has a way of letting the reader know exactly what it looks like and feels like,as a combat veteran in Vietnam. His writting of the sights he seen while flying in a Huey toward the firebases are so real,i've experienced them myself. The fellowship between the fighting soldiers, known as the ''HERD''In the 173rd Airborne is of closeness and trust amoung young men that knew they could count on one another at anytime, and anywhere. No one can really know what young combat soldiers go through unless you were there. To beable to share stories and experiences one day and the next have your best friend ''Give All''.Mr Brewer is one of a kind Strong,Intelligent, and careing, anyone reading his book would feel this and know just how proud a youngman from New York,he is. One of the best books about a combat soldier i've read.A book that all young people should read and understand.

Killing Us Quietly: Native Americans and Hiv/AIDS
Published in Unknown Binding by Bison Books (E) (September, 2001)
Author: Irene S. Vernon
Average review score:

The Definitive Work on Native Americans and AIDS
Dr. Irene Vernon's "Killing Us Quietly: Native Americans and Hiv/AIDS" is a long-overdue, and critically needed work. Vernon provides a depth of details and information pertaining to an issue that is little researched in the academic community. The interviews, research, and discussion make this an invaluable work!

A first of it's kind and a needed title.
Vernon has written the first book to address the issues of AIDS and HIV in the Native American population. She has included interviews with both rural and urban Native Americans. She addresses the virus in women, children, IVU's and two-spirits. A commendable job covering a rarely discussed issue.

The Last Parade: An American War Story
Published in Hardcover by M. Anderson Publishing Company (November, 1999)
Author: Carl Vernon Lamb
Average review score:

the few, the proud
This novel is one of the very best I have ever read on military service. The author, a U.S. Marine, enlisted for the same reason many young men do. He believed in the values of honor, traditions, history, and duty which are bestowed upon all members of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Believing he is being deployed to Korea to liberate the South Korean people he quickly learns that few values exist in combat. Even in the Marine Corps where he has been taught that values are supreme.

In Korea, he experiences the very worst in terms of human behavior among those men whom he was taught were exemplory in character. This novel is a testimony to the brutality and cruelty of all warriors in battle. No matter if they are Chinese Communists or U.S. Marines. Atrocities are detailed which are often committed in hostile environments but are almost never talked about or written in a novel.

A real eye openner to American readers. Enjoy.

Worthwhile Reading
This book provides valuable insight to the daily life of a U.S. Marine during the Korean Conflict. Focusing on the personal struggle between duty and moral conscience as told first hand by author, this is a story that will hold your attention to the unexpected end. Definitely a good selection for anyone interested in the Korean Conflict.

Lunch Time Musicals: Archy & Mehitabel and Sadie Thomspon - The Musical
Published in Audio CD by CBC Audio (August, 2002)
Authors: Don Marquis and Vernon Duke
Average review score:

I liked this when I was eight.
I liked this musical in the late 1950s, when I listened to a recording on vinyl. All I remembered, until listing to the above recording this year (2003), was Archy's song about jumping out the window and floating upwards, and about the cat fighting with Archy. The vinyl recording was first sold in 1954, where one of the two authors of the tale was Mel Brooks (THE Mel Brooks, no less). A third production, called Shinbone Alley, is available from Amazon.com in video format. It is animated with people singing. The production being reviewed is from the year 2001. The voices and singing are excellent. Each voice has a distinguished timbre or quality. The words are easy to understand. The music consists of a piano only. The music is a real composition, not merely something to maintain orientation of the singers. The sound balance is fine. This is not an amateur production. The recording is live, before an audience, an, from time to time there is applause or laughter, but these sounds do not in any way detract from the production. Listening to the current production brought back several pleasant memories, e.g., of the songs and fragments of story line, which, somehow had been stored in my mind, laying dormant, for some 40 years. If the original 1954 recording was reissued, I would buy it too. It might have featured a small orchestra, e.g., clarinets and other instruments, but I am not certain.

I love it!
Archie and Mehitabel alone is worth twice the price. It' s not eddie bracken or eartha kitt or carol channing, but it is still a great kick in the pants. And I tend to hate musical comedy.

Palmistry Cards
Published in Misc. Supplies by Mandala Publishing Group (June, 2002)
Author: Vernon Mahabal
Average review score:

Great basic palm learning tool! Thumbs up!
These cards are well illustrated, the "key points" are very helpful, and overall this set of cards is a great way to introduce palm reading to anybody! The only thing I didn't like was that the cards were repetitive..........and I also didn't like that they were big....but you can't have everything, and I say that you should get this set if you are interested in learning palmistry!

Fun and easy!
These cards are great fun. Each one has a picture of a hand with a certain line or characteristic on them, then you can check it against your hand to see if you have that particular trait. They aren't technically worded, so you don't have to worry about not knowing palmistry, and it's not like you have to be a psychic or something, either. These aren't like tarot cards, where you need to do a lot of studying, or need to know esoteric symbolism. You just look at the card and look at your own hand. Can you handle that? Yes, I think you can.

The all-over look of the cards is very nice; the cover makes it look old-fashioned, like it's from the days of yore. It almost has a 19th century feel to it. It also comes with a little instruction book that is packed with information.

I brought these to work, and everyone was all over them. We all had a lot of fun looking for "lines we had."

Pathways to Perfect Living
Published in Paperback by Stein & Day Pub (December, 1981)
Author: Vernon Howard
Average review score:

Liberating
This book opens your mind to deep thought . The message that he shares in this book is truly inspiring and bring clarity to our jumbled minds. The goodness of life is right in front of us but we don't see the trees but for the forest. This is a master mind at his best. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Outstanding book offering help with life's challenges.
This is my favorite of Mr. Howard's many books. A book of practical advice and illustrative stories I have returned to it again and again for guidance and relief in the face of life challenges.

Political Parties: A Sociological Study of the Oligarchical Tendencies of Modern Democracy
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (November, 1998)
Authors: Robert Michels, Eden Paul, Cedar Paul, and Vernon R. Wiehe
Average review score:

Essential Reading
In the many arguments I've had over the merits of collective action, I have found few arguments as useful as Michels' "iron Law of Oligarchy", stating that even the most egalitarian orginizations wind up having their decisions made by a select few at the top. Morever, institutional reforms will not help, since this tendency is inherent to complex orginization. Surveying the intensification of power across a host of socialist parties and publications, Michels provides much empirical evidence. Too much, at times, as after about 200 pages of stories about leadership groups developing in socialist orginizations, the book starts to drag a little bit. It is all worth it, however, as the "iron law of oligarchy" is one of the most fascinating arguments you'll ever find in a book about politics. Seymour Martin Lipset's introductory comments provide interesting background info.

Monumental work of political science
Michels was a member of a socialist movement who wondered if one could ever have what today is called participatory democracy. The result is this wonderful book, in which Michels discovers the "Iron Law of Oligarchy", that even in the most egalatarian movements, elites will call most of the shots. Michels goes further than many elite theorists who simply claim that this has always been so: he claims that elite management is inherent to complex organizations. Whether you agree or disagree, you must read this man and debate his ideas!
